Stability, Hope and Guidance to Change a Family’s Life

In April 2017, Shawanda and her four children found a home with ACHIEVEability. In the ten years prior to that, she and her family moved frequently. An abusive partner and alcohol addiction made it difficult to maintain a home or a job. At just 28 years old, Shawanda found herself homeless, unemployed and in need of a change.

"I needed help. My children and I deserved so much more. I had so many plans for my life," shared Shawanda.

At ACHIEVEability, Shawanda found a home, and so much more. Our education and career-focused programming helped Shawanda see that there really could be an end to her struggles and a permanent way out of poverty.

When Shawanda first came to ACHIEVEability, it was hard for her to find trust in others after a lifetime of abuse. Now she's confident that her Self-Sufficiency coach is on her side and will not let her down. Today, Shawanda is enrolled at Peirce College, pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Science, Healthcare Administration. In addition to her studies, she works two part time jobs in the home healthcare industry all while being a full time mother.

The supports Shawanda receives at ACHIEVEability help her manage the different parts of her life. She enjoys participating in our job readiness workshops and works with her coach to improve her financial management--skills that will effectively prepare her for the future.

Following completion of her Bachelor's degree, Shawanda plans to apply to nursing programs to further her career path. While reflecting on her journey, she stated, "ACHIEVEability helps my family stay focused. Since we've all been in school, everybody has been getting good grades. Everybody loves school."

For the first time ever, Shawanda feels that she is really making progress on her life goals. Ultimately, Shawanda hopes to own her own home and gain the financial stability needed to pay for her children to attend college.
